Not to be confused, while instant coffee and coffee premix are both soluble coffee that dissolves with just hot water, there is a difference between instant coffee and coffee premix.
As opposed to instant coffee with nothing added, ingredients like sugar, milk, cream, etc. are added to the coffee premix. Both are generally known as ‘instant coffee’ though.
There are also two popular coffee premix options in the market – 3-in-1 coffee which includes sugar, milk or cream, and coffee; While 2-in-1 is usually the unsweetened mixture without sugar.
Based on our findings, there are easily more than 60 local instant coffee premix brands in Malaysia. This is not including foreign or international coffee brands.
If you don’t already know, SUPER, Cafe21, Boncafe, Gold Roast and OWL are originated from Singapore, while Kapal Api and Kopiko (remember Elon Musk?) are founded in Indonesia.
Besides from our neighbouring countries, there are also a handful of coffee brands sold by international brands like Nestle, Wonda, Frenché Roast, L’OR ESSENSO, etc.
While this is a hugely competitive and crowded space, we have seen success stories like OLDTOWN being acquired by a Dutch company, and In-Comix is under the Hup Seng umbrella now.
Ipoh is undoubtedly the home of coffee, especially famed for its white coffee. There are quite a couple of local coffee premix brands that are originated from Penang and Johor.
Some of the long-established local instant coffee brands have interesting names, such as Cap Keretapi (Train), Cap Tupai (Squirrel), Cap Televisyen (TV Brand).
